Nature Hike at King-Swett Ranches   Saturday,  MAY  7, 2022
9:00 AM

SOLANO LAND TRUST —  King-Swett Ranches
Come explore the hills between Fairfield, Benicia, and Vallejo! You'll be led by expert Solano Land Trust guides who know this area—known as the King-Swett Ranches—inside out. They'll share insights about the birds and other wildlife in this area, and give you a great workout! Take advantage of this special opportunity if you can because the King-Swett Ranches are otherwise closed. Bring: a backpack with plenty of water and snacks, boots or sturdy closed-toe shoes with tread for rugged, steep, and slippery off-trail terrain, long, sturdy pants and layered clothes that you don't mind getting dirty, protection from the elements (sun, wind, fog, rain). Recommended: binoculars, camera, bug repellent, hiking sticks, gaiters. Participants of all ages are welcome, but they must be prepared: a strenuous pace hiking up to 6 miles off-trail, up and down rugged, steep, and slippery hills that are full of sticky seeds, thorny plants, and thistle. The King-Swett Ranches are working ranches—cattle are free range so they roam as they please. Sorry, no dogs allowed. Registration is required. For more information or to register, visit us online.

11:00 AM

PEÑA ADOBE HISTORICAL SOCIETY & RUSH RANCH EDUCATIONAL COUNCIL —  Peña Adobe Park
The May 7 open house event will feature performances by the Congressional Gunfighters of America, a professional acting stunt troupe! The reenactment group is dedicated to preserving old Western history, specializing in live entertainment. They use period costuming and weaponry. Prior to the pandemic, they performed at historical “old town” events, train robberies, rodeos, state fairs, and specialty events. Some club members have appeared in films and TV shows! In addition to the gunfighters, music will be provided by the Vacaville Acoustic Jammers, directed by Terry and Leslie Cloper. The Jammers sing and play a variety of instruments, including guitar, banjo, mandolin, fiddle, and harmonica.

The Peña Adobe is the oldest fully restored structure in Solano County. The adobe was built in 1842 by Juan Felipe Pena after he and Juan Manuel Vaca arrived from the New Mexico region. Tours of the Adobe conducted by 5th generation Peña family descendants Cecelia Peña and Darlene Stewart will be available throughout the day. Native American Park Docents Armando Perez and James Tunstall will be speaking with park visitors of the Native Americans who lived here before the Peñas and Vacas arrived in the Lagoon Valley. The park is also home to the Mowers-Goheen Museum, with its artifacts from the area’s settlement, as well as the Willis Linn Jepson Memorial Garden and the Indian Council Ground. Fun activities for children will include an old fashioned Potato Sack Race and learning to rope cattle.

The Peña Adobe Regional Park is located in picturesque Lagoon Valley off of Interstate 80, left of the Lagoon Valley Park entrance. This event is free! For questions call (707) 447-0518.
