	Hike at King-Swett Ranches Saturday, FEB 1, 2014 9:00 AM SOLANO LAND TRUST — King-Swett Ranches Come explore the hills between Fairfield, Benicia, and Vallejo! You'll be led by Jim Walsh and/or James Chang, both expert Solano Land Trust guides who know this area—known as the King-Swett Ranches—inside out. They'll share insights about the birds and other wildlife that call this area home, and give you a great workout! Take advantage of this special opportunity if you can because the King-Swett Ranches are otherwise closed. Bring: a backpack with plenty of water and snacks, boots or sturdy closed-toe shoes with tread for rugged, steep, and slippery off-trail terrain, long, sturdy pants and layered clothes that you don't mind getting dirty, protection from the elements (sun, wind, fog, rain). Recommended: binoculars, camera, bug repellent, hiking sticks, gaiters. Participants of all ages are welcome, but they must be prepared: a strenuous pace hiking 4-6 miles off-trail, up and down rugged, steep, and slippery hills that are full of sticky seeds, thorny plants, and thistle. 	Volunteer Opportunity: Trail Crew Saturday, FEB 1, 2014 9:00 AM SOLANO LAND TRUST — Rush Ranch Our land is our future, so jump in with your boots on! Rush Ranch is over 2,000 acres of tidal marsh and upland grasses. Help Solano Land Trust's Land Steward, Ken Poerner, maintain it through trail maintenance, construction, litter removal, and other improvement projects. 	Over-wintering Birds of Prey Hike Saturday, FEB 1, 2014 10:00 AM SOLANO LAND TRUST — Lynch Canyon Open Space Park Join Larry Broderick and the Solano Land Trust Raptor Team for the 2013 fall raptor migration. The tour will be focused on resident, migrating and over-wintering birds of prey. Previous sightings include Golden Eagles, Bald Eagles, Rough-legged Hawks, Cooper's Hawks, Sharp-shinned Hawks, Ferruginous Hawks, Peregrine Falcons, Prairie Falcons and other more common birds of prey. Broderick has over 25 years of experience with birds of prey. All ages are welcome, but participants must be prepared for a moderate pace covering about 4 miles, possibly off-trail in places, up and down rugged, steep, and slippery hills that are full of sticky seeds, thorny plants and thistle, and passing free range cattle along the way. Volunteers need not be experts – if you have an interest in conservation or restoration, we welcome you at these events. Families are also welcome, although the plug planting events are best for families with small children (10 and under). 	Rockville Hills Regional Park Trail Crew Saturday, FEB 15, 2014 9:00 AM CITY OF FAIRFIELD — Rockville Hills Regional Park The Rockville Trail Crew volunteer work days are scheduled for the third Saturday of every month from 9-12noon, rain or shine! Trail Crew volunteers provide technical assistance with trail maintenance and construction activities on the trails. Trail Crew volunteer duties consist of clearing rocks, trees, brush and other debris from proposed trail routes; build/repair walk ways, bridges or other structures; grade/fill existing trail paths to ensure user safety; and attend all required meetings and training sessions. 	Horse Day at McIntyre Ranch Saturday, FEB 15, 2014 10:00 AM GVRD — McIntyre Ranch For ages 8-17 -- Learn about the friendly horses and goats, and participate in their daily care. Wear sturdy work clothes and tough shoes because this is a "hand-on" experience. You will put a halter on a horse, learn to lead horses safely, brush them, clean their feet and clean their stalls. 	Rush Ranch 'Get the Rush' Saturday, FEB 15, 2014 10:00 AM SOLANO LAND TRUST AND RUSH RANCH EDUCATIONAL COUNCIL — Rush Ranch 9:30am to 12:30am: Participants will learn about the Patwin Indians -- the first human inhabitants of the Suisun Marsh and surrounding Solano County. Discover how they didn't just survive, but thrived by building their communities in and around what is now known as Rush Ranch. See an outcropping used for grinding fish and/or acorns, an example of a Patwin dwelling, and find out what a typical day in the life of the Patwin might have been like. This hike is easy and slow-paced. Bring water, snacks, sturdy closed-toe shoes, layered clothing and protection from the elements. If desired, bring binoculars, cameras, insect repellent. No RSVP is necessary. Meet your guides in the brick courtyard and native plant garden, next to the Nature Center exhibit. 10am to 1pm: Travel back in time as you enter the historic Rush Ranch Blacksmith Shop. Learn about traditional blacksmithing tools and equipment, and see the forge in the center of the ranch. Take part in an interactive demonstration with smithy Virgil Sellers and team. You may even get the opportunity to make your own iron nail or other keepsake! 10am to 1pm: Visit Little Bear at his table full of Native American tools and decorations, most of which he hand-crafted himself. 	Volunteer Tree & Shrub Planting -- Morning Saturday, FEB 22, 2014 9:00 AM SOLANO RESOURCE CONSERVATION DISTRICT — Alamo Creek Trail & Southside Bike Trail Solano Resource Conservation District will be holding a number of 3-hour volunteer planting events along the Alamo Creek and Southside Bike Trails in the city of Vacaville. Each planting date will have a morning or an afternoon session to sign up for. Over 1,000 native trees and shrubs as well as 10,000 native grass, sedge and wildflower plugs will be planted at 10 sites where there are currently few trees or other native plants growing. Volunteers need not be experts – if you have an interest in conservation or restoration, we welcome you at these events. Families are also welcome, although the plug planting events are best for families with small children (10 and under). Participants should bring sun protection and a water bottle and dress in layers of clothing. Solano RCD will provide snacks and all necessary tools. An RSVP is required to reserve a spot.
