New Year's Day Hike   Wednesday,  JAN  1, 2014
12:00 PM

SOLANO LAND TRUST —  Rockville Trails Preserve
Start your New Year off on the right foot by joining docents Richard and Cathy on a free guided hike at Rockville Trails Preserve. Take advantage of this opportunity if you can because Solano Land Trust's newly acquired Rockville Trails property is only accessible by docent-led hikes at this time. Arrive on time and be prepared to immediately carpool or caravan from the meeting place to the trailhead. Participants of all ages are welcome, but they must be prepared for an intermediate to strenuous pace hiking 4-6 miles up and down rugged, steep, and slippery hills that are full of sticky seeds, thorny plants, and thistle. Rockville Trails is a working ranch—cattle are free range so they roam as they please. All trails are unimproved—expect rough, rocky, uneven ground. Visitors must be accompanied by a docent at all times. Since the preserve is otherwise closed, the entry and exit gate will be locked except for the start and end times of the hike. There is no drinking water. There are no bathrooms. Bring a backpack with plenty of water and snacks. Boots or sturdy closed-toe shoes with good tread, long, sturdy pants and layered clothes, protection from the elements (sun, wind, fog, rain, cold). Also recommended: Hiking sticks, bug repellent, binoculars, camera. Heavy rain cancels. Advance registration is required. Click here to register online, or call Cathy at 707-745-1913.
Leader: Richard and Cathy Christo
Registration is required.
Location: Fairfield
DIRECTIONS: Meet promptly at the big red "Ice House" building on Suisun Valley Ct, near the intersection of Rockville Rd and Suisun Valley Rd, Fairfield, CA. Be ready to immediately carpool or caravan from there to the trailhead.

NAPA - SOLANO AUDUBON SOCIETY —  Napa and Solano Counties
The Trumpeter Swans may still be at Lagoon Valley near Vacaville. We will go there to see. Expect large flocks of many kinds of ducks (500-1000 Ring-necked), hawks, sparrows, shorebirds and woodpeckers. With patience and stealth, a Swamp sparrow is a regular sighting. We'll walk completely around the lake - 2 miles.
Leader: Murray Berner
DIRECTIONS: Meet at Sweeney's Sport Store, 1537 Imola Ave West, Napa, at 7:45 to carpool, or 8:00 at Lagoon Valley. Car-poolers will share driving expenses (recommended $.30/mi to be split by the number of riders).

Come explore the hills between Fairfield, Benicia, and Vallejo! Take advantage of this special opportunity if you can because the King-Swett Ranches are otherwise closed. Bring: a backpack with plenty of water and snacks, boots or sturdy closed-toe shoes with tread for rugged, steep, and slippery off-trail terrain, long, sturdy pants and layered clothes that you don't mind getting dirty, protection from the elements (sun, wind, fog, rain). Recommended: binoculars, camera, bug repellent, hiking sticks, gaiters. Participants of all ages are welcome, but they must be prepared: a strenuous pace hiking 4-6 miles off-trail, up and down rugged, steep, and slippery hills that are full of sticky seeds, thorny plants, and thistle. The King-Swett Ranches are working ranches—cattle are free range so they roam as they please. Very heavy rain cancels—call Jim at 916-870-4824 if the weather is uncertain.
